Medals And Trophies 2018

Organizing Wines for the IWA Jury Sessions

Wines are organized for tasting by style, color, country and price. Judges taste and score these wines blind, without any knowledge or bias of what they are or where they come from. Each wine is tasted by a minimum of three judges on a particular panel, to arrive at an average. Medals are awarded based on a 100-point scoring system, where the appearance, nose and palate of wines, all carried weightage. Processes are aligned with global competition standards where wines are judged on their own individual merits. That means it is entirely possible for several wines to get Silver, Gold or Diamond medal in one session. Similarly, another session may yield fewer medals.

Medal to Point System

  • 85 - 89 : Silver (well-made, straightforward, enjoyable wine)
  • 90 - 94 : Gold (a very accomplished wine, with impressive complexity)
  • 95 - 100 : Diamond (an excellent wine with great complexity and character)
  • Trophy Wine - Best in Class : All diamond (or gold winners, where there were no diamond winners) medal winning wines within each category are re-tasted by the core organising committee. 'Trophy Wine' for Best in Class medal is awarded to the best in each category.
